# Entropy Data

> Entropy Data is a data management platform for data products and data contracts. It serves as an enterprise data marketplace where teams can discover, share, and govern data across the organization.

Entropy Data GmbH is a company based in Germany, founded in 2025 as a spin-off from INNOQ. The co-founders are Dr. Simon Harrer (CEO) and Jochen Christ (CTO).

## Core Product

Entropy Data is a platform with three core areas:
- **Marketplace**: For data consumers to discover data products and request access
- **Studio**: For data product owners and developers to create, edit, and monitor data products
- **Governance**: For stewards and platform teams to define policies, manage access, and ensure compliance

The platform supports the Open Data Contract Standard (ODCS) and the Open Data Product Standard (ODPS), both governed by Bitol under the Linux Foundation.

## Key Concepts

### Data Contracts
A data contract is a document that defines the ownership, structure, semantics, quality, and terms of use for exchanging data between a data producer and their consumers. Think of an API specification, but for data. The standard format is the Open Data Contract Standard (ODCS), a YAML-based specification.

### Data Products
A data product is a logical unit that contains all components to process and store domain data for analytical or data-intensive use cases and makes them available to other teams via output ports. Data products have clear ownership and well-defined data contracts.

### Open Data Contract Standard (ODCS)
ODCS is an open, machine-readable YAML specification for defining data contracts, governed by Bitol under the Linux Foundation. It originated from PayPal and is now in version 3.1. It covers schema, data quality, SLAs, terms of use, team ownership, and infrastructure.

### MCP Server for Data Products
Entropy Data provides an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that enables AI clients like Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot to securely discover, access, and query data products with full data governance.

### Semantics
Semantics is Entropy Data's shared business ontology. It models a domain as concepts (Entity, Shared Property, Metric, Group) and typed relationships (hasProperty, isA, measures, derived_from, relatedTo). Concepts are linked to data products and data contract fields using ODCS `authoritativeDefinitions`. The ontology can be edited as YAML, browsed as a list, or explored as an interactive graph. Concepts, properties, and relationships can carry translations of their name and description in any number of languages, stored as `lang`-tagged annotations and rendered in the UI based on the user's language preference. Entropy Data includes ready-to-import industry ontologies (GoodRelations, FIBO, EBU Core Plus, CGMES, IDMP, EPCIS, IATA ONE Record, TM Forum SID); several of them (such as EBU Core Plus) ship with English, German, and French translations out of the box. Semantics supplies the context that LLM-based querying needs to pick the right join keys and metric definitions. It replaces the previous Business Definitions catalogue and is available behind the feature flag `APPLICATION_SEMANTICS_ENABLED`.

Entropy Data is committed to the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) initiative (https://github.com/open-semantic-interchange/OSI), a vendor-agnostic open-source standard for exchanging semantic models between BI platforms, AI agents, and analytics tools. Entropy Data will support the upcoming OSI Ontology standard natively in Semantics.

- **Data Contract CLI** (github.com/datacontract/datacontract-cli): Python CLI for validating, testing, and exporting data contracts. Supports 15+ data sources including Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery.
- **Data Contract Editor** (editor.datacontract.com): Web-based visual editor for ODCS data contracts.
